Caroline Hamel

Caroline Hamel is a painter whose work explores themes of introspective nostalgia. She draws inspiration from haunting music and its emotional resonance, with an aim toward abstraction. Working primarily with a dark, predominantly blue palette, Hamel constructs quiet, out-of-focus worlds that are both mysterious and contemplative, often seeking traces of light within the dimness. Existential questions and the complexities of the human condition remain central to her practice, expressed through soft, moody atmospheres that evoke reflection and emotion.

Caroline Hamel is a Quebec-born artist and graduate in graphic design. She began her career in advertising, working as an art director for several well-known agencies before establishing herself as a children’s book illustrator. Over the years, she has published more than twenty illustrated titles and received numerous distinctions for her work, including honors from the Applied Arts Awards, The Canadian Children’s Book Center, and Bologna Children's Book Fair among others.

A few years ago, Hamel renewed her commitment to her first artistic passion and personal exploration, developing a visual practice that embraces fluid painting on raw cotton canvas, a process that reflects a dialogue between control and intuition, movement, and the organic interplay of color and texture.
