David Hanes

David Hanes (b. 1987, Canada/USA) is an artist whose practice has shifted from digital and conceptual work toward a nature-rooted engagement with painting. Based in Berlin since 2014, he maintains a nomadic rhythm, travelling widely and allowing his journeys to shape the foundations of his work. His process begins with plein-air sketches that act as “momentary snapshots” of place and feeling. With the passage of time, these sketches transform into oil paintings or watercolours, filtered through memory and distance.

This temporal shift infuses the work with both immediacy and reflection, balancing the raw energy of experience with contemplative re-encounter. Colour becomes a conduit for sensation—expressing currents of life, questions of time, and the resonance of memory. Recalling the spirit of early modern painters, Hanes captures not appearances but atmospheres: dynamic, expressive translations of being in the world, where emotion and perception converge in painterly form.

David Hanes’ work has been exhibited with Mott Projects, Zepster Gallery, White Noise Gallery, Open Forum, and Platform by David Zwirner. In September 2025, he began his MA at the Royal College of Art, London.
