Joseph Noderer
Joseph Noderer regards painting as (among a universe of other things) a way to dig into and reflect upon his experience of being. He draws inspiration primarily from his immediate environment, which happens to be his home-region of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Noderer’s perspective is highly influenced by his life of experiences from the surrounding landscape, family and friends, as well as his deep commitment to and love for the practice and history of painting. He often finds that his paintings mine both of these histories simultaneously; mingling the two into spaces that are ordinary yet dreamlike, feeling personal but somehow shared.
Noderer was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1978. After attending Tyler School of Art to receive his Bachelor’s degree in painting, he traveled to Chicago to earn his Masters in Fine Art (painting) from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Joseph frequently appears in group and solo shows in the US and elsewhere. Noderer’s paintings, often remembered combinations of sites found in and around his neighborhood and greater environs, are imbued with both feelings of wonder and bleakness. His portraits of natural, urban and human subjects are intuitively crafted, through idiosyncratic color and composition often resulting in ordinary yet dreamlike spaces.
