Lily Rose Fine
Lily Rose Fine is a British/Canadian painter. Interested in our human need for meaning, she examines how devotion manifests in a modern, secular context; arising through personal relationships, the self, and art making as an attempt at an afterlife. Within a collected language of iconography pulled from relics, antique objects, cinema, theatre, and art history, she casts herself and those close to her as recurring actors that embody narratives of intimacy, obsession, preservation, and privacy. Fine’s painting process references early religious art through glazing techniques, framing devices, and narrative symbolism to imbue modern infatuation and idolization with the same enchantment. The contrived, performative process of mimicking antiquity invokes an uncanniness that amplifies the absurdity and slightly unsettling intensity of worship.
