Thomas Cameron

Thomas Cameron paints everyday scenes based primarily on candid photographs he takes of people and places in the city. His paintings draw attention to understated, fleeting moments in urban life, often overlooked through familiarity.

His interest in filmic imagery and vernacular photography inform his approach to composition and the suggestion of untold stories. He explores how pictorial devices can transform an observed scene into a psychological landscape. The material qualities of oil paint are central to this process: abbreviated details and tactile brushwork create ambiguity, inviting the viewer into the painting.

His paintings often depict transitional spaces and urban non-places, where people become anonymous customers, commuters or workers. Through these familiar settings, Cameron explores the tension between togetherness and isolation in everyday city life.
