Charlie Yates’s painting practice moves between landscape and abstraction, guided by the shifting presence of light. Working primarily in oil, he builds each surface slowly, layering thin washes and heavier pigment until light begins to act as its own material across the surface. The larger painting Drift takes inspiration from Castaic Lake, just north of his studio in Los Angeles, a place Yates visited after last year’s destructive fires. Painting became a way to process that encounter, to hold onto the feeling of standing before something altered yet still alive. The work carries that experience forward, tracing how light moves through loss and finds its way back. In this way, Yates treats landscape as both a real and imagined space, where memory and material overlap. Light becomes the thread that connects them, a quiet force that reminds us how things recover and continue to exist in new forms.
