Jiaxiang Xiong

Jiaxiang Xiong, (b.1991, Shanghai, China) focuses on mixed-media image installation. His works initiate dialogues with the canons in art history, This series, dubbed "Square Paintings" by the artist, employs the "square" as an endeavor to re-establish our distance from the image within the context of our AI era. The artist's research also encompasses the evolving history of the square form itself. These paintings, hovering between still life and landscape, function more as an expression of a psychological landscape and emotional state. In their creation, the artist utilizes cosmetics alongside traditional materials for oil and mural restoration. The application of cosmetics as a medium serves a dual purpose: it accentuates the painting's mundane materiality, while its conceptual presence facilitates a discourse on the contemporary psyche, modern values, and historical nihilism.
